BBC News Arabic is the largest language service of the BBC, providing news and current affairs on TV, Radio, Digital and Social Media to major Arabic speaking audiences in the Middle East, North Africa and beyond. Its documentaries and programmes team has won multiple UK and international awards for its content.
BBC Xtra is a key part of the channel’s schedule – a ground-breaking, digitally focused TV programme reaching out to younger news and current affairs audiences, and to those who are less likely to engage with traditional news content. It aims to introduce people in different parts of the Arab world to each other and to explore important social and political issues in a way that is engaging, innovative and entertaining.
Role Responsibility
We’re looking for an Assistant Editor to build and lead our BBC Xtra output – an excellent journalist with strong digital and commissioning skills and ability to inspire a team and lead change.
Reporting to the Senior Programmes Editor based in London, your role will be to lead our BBC Arabic Xtra TV team in Beirut. You will oversee the programme delivery on both its digital first and young audience targets, managing complex editorial issues and ensuring content adheres to BBC editorial guidelines. You will ensure content and style is creative and relevant to the target audience.

Role
The Assistant Editor role will be expected to manage and deliver content for BBC Arabic, so we are looking for expertise in the following areas
Leadership – clear ability to think strategically about the future, manage a team and build new relationships.
Distribution - understanding of social platforms and ability to oversee key relationships with other parts of the BBC, like Webpage, Social platform, Programmes, News, as well as Video content.
Audiences – experience delivering content for a 16- 34 audiences.
Formats – excellent knowledge of written formats and graphic treatments, and an understanding of video.
Candidates will need sound editorial judgement and deep understanding of editorial processes, including Editorial Policy and sign-off. You will need to be a team player, demonstrate proactivity at coming up with new and ideas and treatments and show they can quickly adapt to changing circumstances and relish new challenges.
Fluency in Arabic and English, both written and spoken, is essential.
